Mark Farina built a genre on cassette tapes. Thirty-five years later, Mushroom Jazz runs deep - and this Halloween, he and Nutritious bring it to Miami.

On Friday, October 31, ZeyZey Miami hosts a milestone worth marking: the 35th Anniversary of Mushroom Jazz, the genre-defying series that turned funky instrumental hip-hop, soulful downtempo, and blunted beats into a movement. Leading the celebration is the series' creator, Mark Farina, joined by longtime touring partner and fellow crate-digger Nutritious (Liquid Culture). Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Chuck Love joins Mark for his set. Tickets range from free to $64.15.

A Sound With Roots

Mushroom Jazz began with a teenager obsessed with records: at 16, Mark Farina fell into Chicago's underground through the legendary underage club Medusa's, and a chance meeting with Derrick Carter at Imports Etc. pointed him toward the house pioneers who'd shape his sound. By 1988 he'd landed his enduring residency at Smart Bar, and in 1989 he co-produced "Mood," credited as the first-ever "ambient house" track.

Then came something deeper: blending West Coast jazzy beats, acid jazz, the Chicago house of his youth, De La Soul, disco classics, and '90s New York hip-hop into a sound all his own. He pressed the early mixes onto limited-edition cassettes that sold out in minutes at Gramophone Records, and by the time OM Records launched the CD series in 1996, a cult following had already formed. Today, Farina plays over 100 shows a year and hosts a hit Mushroom Jazz YouTube show with Defected Records. The series' staying power was firmly rooted when Mushroom Jazz 8 debuted at #1 on Billboard's Dance/Electronic chart for its 25th anniversary.

“Mushroom Jazz started out in B-rooms in Chicago clubs as an alternative to the house and techno being played in the main rooms. I wanted to share my love of hip hop, trip hop, acid jazz, dusties and eclectic beats with people looking for a chill vibe on a club night. 35 years later it’s grown into this thing I never could have imagined back then and I’m grateful to everyone that continues to support this music I love playing so much.” Mark Farina

A Liquid Lineage – about Nutritious

If Farina invented the language, Nutritious speaks it fluently in his own dialect. A true DJ's DJ, self-taught on cassette and vinyl, he moves meticulously through deep house, indie dance, balearic, nu-disco, leftfield, rare funk, and soul. A lifelong crate-digger and founder of Liquid Culture Records, he plays three to four decks with FX as live instruments, reshaping songs in real time and crafting extended all-night journeys from obscure gems. He's toured Mushroom Jazz with Farina across the US and internationally on Jam Cruise.

There's a deeper current running through his work, too. A founding member of the pioneering psychedelics community DoubleBlind, Nutritious fluidly bridges psychedelia, embodied listening, and club culture—through a steady stream of releases that runs from his trippy debut Divinity to his new album Solarmaxxing on Liquid Culture. With numerous Beatport Top 5s and each new release hitting peak rotation alongside Daft Punk, Tycho, Kaskade, Billie Eilish, and Rüfüs Du Sol on SiriusXM, along with spins across global FM, his reach spans well beyond the underground. Appearances range from Ultra, Pikes, and IMS Ibiza to New York Fashion Week, ZeyZey NYE, and a special performance at the Whitney Museum of American Art supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation. As Mixmag put it, "Nutritious belongs to a different lineage."

"Having learned by playing weekend-long parties, my favorite is the extended set where I can meld tempos and styles into an evolving journey. There's no wall between a soul record and a deep house track when there's enough time to explore the full spectrum." Nutritious

ZeyZey is Miami's beloved open-air sanctuary tucked into Little River. Part garden, part gathering place, it pairs lush tropical foliage and string-lit palms with a serious sound system and its chic on-site disco keeps the energy pulsing well past midnight. It's the rare Miami venue built for exactly the kind of long, exploratory night Mushroom Jazz was made for: unhurried, immersive, and deeply communal.

Limited-Edition Merch

To mark the occasion, limited-edition 35th Anniversary Mushroom Jazz merchandise will be available exclusively at the show—a collector's nod to the cassette-era roots that started it all.
