On OTN trece, Umo explores the implications of reduction within club music. The EP’s five tracks are built on a process of elimination, where unnecessary elements are removed until only functional components remain.
This approach produces a distinctive listening experience. Without dense layering, attention shifts to timing, spacing, and the interaction between sounds. Small changes acquire greater significance, and repetition becomes a site of variation rather than redundancy.
The slow rave framework situates the EP within a broader conceptual field. By slowing down rave-derived rhythms, Umo introduces a different kind of control. Energy is not lost but redistributed, creating a sustained intensity that unfolds over time.
The tracks’ live-tested nature is central. Their structure reflects feedback from real dancefloor conditions, resulting in pieces that prioritise adaptability. They can extend, compress, or subtly redirect a set without disrupting its flow.
In line with OpenTheNext’s ethos, Trece avoids overt positioning. It does not aim for immediate impact but for long-term integration within a selective circuit.
